Ecuador refugee program

-- Ecuador

1-year term
Ages 18–26
Journey International

In the Ecuadorian highlands, Journey participants will work with the Mennonite churches in Quito for most of the time, working with children's peace workshops, Colombian refugee aid, after-school tutoring, and other ministries of the congregation. The congregations have a vision to be a peacebuilding presence in this city of 2.7 million, with a significant ministry to refugees from Colombia and other parts of the world. Many Colombians have become part of the church due to the compassionate hospitality shown to them by this congregation.

Long-term mission workers Delicia Bravo and Peter Wigginton will be your team mentors, bringing years of experience living and working in various countries in Latin America. They will orient you to the country, the city, and to your service, and walk alongside you throughout the year. We only expect to have two or three participants on this team, so apply early!

The team will also spend time with Mission Network workers, the Ross Richer family, in the Ecuadorian rainforest to learn about ministry among indigenous people and care for the environment. If you are outgoing, patient and energetic, and would like to teach English at a school in the rainforest, a special assignment can be arranged for several weeks or several months.

Journey participants will be welcome to visit all three Quito area Mennonite churches, where you will experience vibrant worship and fellowship and learn what it is like to be a Christian in that part of the world. You will have times of reflection and Bible study to strengthen your own faith. Together with your team, you will create a community of support and encouragement during this life-changing year.

Here is a link to a video prepared by our mission workers, Peter and Delicia Wigginton about the churches and people in Quito.

If you have a positive attitude, are self-motivated, and up for spontaneity and improving your Spanish, Ecuador may be just the right place for you!
