July 16–31, 2020
Team size: 6–8 participants
Your Youth Venture team will join the work of the Iglesia Cristiana Menonita congregation in Iquitos, Perú - a young church in Iquitos, with children, adolescent and youth ministries in Rumococha, Isla Bonita, Monte de Sión and San Juan.
Worship services for all ages began in 2012, though the church had its start much earlier through children's and youth ministries. Cecy Wong, who is from Iquitos, initiated ministries before meeting her husband David Moreno from Iglesia Cristiana Menonita de Colombia (IMCOL). David and Cecy, along with Juan Carlos Moreno and Cielo Arguello were commissioned as IMCOL missionaries and provide leadership in Iquitos. Ministries with children and youth led to meeting with their families, who expressed interest in beginning to meet as a church. In addition to the worship services, nearly 300 children are involved in weekly activities in four locations, including music, worship, games and meals together. The church also works with adolescents and youth, offering music, art, English, and discipleship ministries. The youth receive practical training to serve as leaders working with the children.

Every year in July, a youth camp is held where children can experience a place to play and hear more about God. Your Youth Venture team will add valuable extra hands to help prepare for and to assist during the camp. If you have expertise in music, drama, sports, art, etc., you'll be welcome to share those gifts during camp. A video from the 2016 camp will whet your appetite to be part of this exciting ministry: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezdwFRBSh48.
Iquitos is a city in the middle of the Amazon jungle of Perú. Since it is surrounded by rivers, it is accessible only by plane or long trips by boat on the Amazon River. Approximately 80 percent of the population is of Indigenous peoples who have very limited resources. The main source of income is informal trade and tourism.
Your accommodations will mostly likely be in the church building where you might sleep on mats on the floor and have access to two bathrooms with showers. Meals will be prepared by church members.
Travel to location
You will meet your team for orientation in a major U.S. city (yet to be determined). You will need to make your own travel arrangements to the departure city. Details will be forthcoming. Youth Venture will make your travel arrangements from the United States to Iquitos.
If you do not have a passport, you can download an application at www.travel.state.gov/passport/forms.html. Please allow ample time for passport processing.
Youth Venture is asking each participant to raise $1,850 USD to help cover team expenses. This amount covers the cost of orientation, travel to the assignment, in-country travel, lodging and food. Participants will need additional funds to cover their health insurance, immunizations, passport, and travel to orientation. Expected contribution is subject to change in the event of significant airline price increases. All gifts are non-refundable and will be used to fund the Youth Venture team ministry in Peru regardless of individual fundraising goals.
