PALS, the children's program of La Puente home, focuses on the educational, emotional and social needs of high-risk children ages 5 - 10. Many are from families served by La Puente's homeless shelter and homeless prevention programs, along with children referred by child protective services. Some of the children are currently in foster or other out-of-home placements. PALS provides in-school, after-school and summer learning supports, along with social-emotional skills, recreational activities, and community service opportunities .

Work with PALS team to design and deliver programming for high-risk children in school, after-school and summer settings, including:

  • academic assistance
  • recreation and field trips
  • life skills education
  • culture & arts (e.g., music, drama, writing, etc.)
  • other tasks & projects as assigned, to promote the mission of PALS

During the school year, the day is divided between supporting children in their school setting in the mornings and delivering after-school academic assistance and other programming. During the summer, a daycamp with a variety of activities and outings is provided.

Qualifications:

  • B.A. (teaching, social work, etc.) or equivalent experience in children's programming
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse ages, cultures & special needs of children (ages 5 - 10)
  • Ability to multi-task and handle stresses associated with needs and trauma of high-risk children
  • Spanish language skills ,and/or experience living in a Latino setting in the U.S. or abroad, a plus

This is an active and at times intense work environment. Due to the challenges PALS children face, there is a high staff to child ratio and an emphasis on teamwork. Many of the children come from local or immigrant Latino families, so cross-cultural understanding is key.
