Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is known for its continuous efforts to pave the way for leading a brighter future for families in need. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 1,000,000 houses in nearly 100 countries, providing simple, decent and affordable shelter for more than one million people. Habitat also advocates to improve access to decent and affordable shelter and offers a variety of housing support services that enable families with limited means to make needed improvements on their homes as their time and resources allow. The Office of Government Relations and Advocacy (GRA) leads Habitat's efforts to advocate for systems, policies and attitudes that advance adequate, affordable housing around the world. Based in Washington, DC, the GRA team builds the organization's advocacy capacity by providing the global Habitat network with strategic direction and support to effect change and allow Habitat to serve more families. Additionally, the GRA team maintains relationships with Members of Congress, government agencies, non-profits, international organizations, and other policymakers in Washington, D.C. and around the world to inform, advocate, educate, and provide linkages to the field.

What will you build?
As a U.S. Policy and Advocacy Volunteer, you will volunteer on a wide array of projects related to Habitat's U.S. policy work including federal, as well as state and local engagement. In this position you will have the opportunity to support Habitat affiliates across the nation in developing their advocacy agendas, track and research housing policy at all levels, participate in coalition meetings on a variety of federal issues, develop advocacy related materials and tools, and communicate and meet with Congressional offices. You will also play an important role in the implementation of Habitat's annual policy conference, Habitat on the Hill. At this conference, more than 200 attendees from Habitat affiliates come together in Washington DC to learn the latest in affordable housing policy and meet with their members of Congress on Capitol Hill.

Volunteer assignment details:

  • Engage Congressional offices on Habitat's legislative priorities
  • Conduct research, analysis, and writing on state and local policy issues that impact affordable housing, access to homeownership, and issues impacting local affiliates' service to low-income households
  • Develop tools and resources to help build the advocacy capacity of Habitat affiliate across the U.S.
  • Support the planning and execution of Habitat's annual legislative conference, Habitat on the Hill.
  • Attend external forums, coalition meetings and other events as requested by staff
  • Provide additional support to Habitat's Government Relations and Advocacy office

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Interest in affordable housing policy
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct research
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, social sciences, or related field
  • Housing or community development experience
