The community organizer will be working with two partner organizations in Madison, The Interfaith Coalition for Worker Justice of South Central Wisconsin (ICWJ) and The Workers' Rights Center (WRC).
ICWJ, established in Madison in 1999, is a coalition of individuals, religious congregations, interfaith bodies, labor unions, and community organizations concerned about economic and worker justice. Our mission is to educate and mobilize the religious and labor communities of South Central Wisconsin on worker rights issues, to actively build relationships between faith and labor groups, and to support the rights of workers to organize and engage in collective bargaining. The Workers' Rights Center is a community center dedicated to educating and advocating for worker justice. The Center is committed to empowering workers. A major focus has been training people in the community as advocates to assist others in resolving workplace problems. By its work and advocacy, the Workers' Rights Center seeks to affirm the dignity of work and the dignity and respect that should be afforded to all members of our community, as expressed in the social teachings of many faiths.
The community organizer will primarily work on community outreach and communication in the faith and labor communities. The individual job responsibilities for the successful applicant will be tailored to the experience, skills, and goals of that person. The responsibilities below are some candidates for inclusion in that final job description.
- Do outreach to local faith communities and labor to group to strengthen the power of the faith-labor coalition.
- Speak and teach in local faith communities about economic justice and worker justice issues.
- Help plan and execute community events such as ICWJ's Faith-Labor breakfast and Labor in the Pulpit.
- Manage ICWJ's online communications including website, e-blasts and social media by creating, editing and posting content.
- Help recruit and maintain volunteers.
- Meet with workers to help them navigate solutions to workplace grievances at WRC.
- Plan work place rights trainings for community members and service providers.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Interest and ability to work with people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience in social networking, especially Facebook and Twitter
- Experience with wordpress or similar website software.
- Experience in grassroots activism and coalition work
- Being self-directed and able to work independently while also exhibiting strong teamwork.
- Have a passion for social change.
- English fluency required; Spanish fluency desired
