Mennonite Voluntary Service

Agency description:

Our mission: Connecting people of all ages to a world of opportunities through literacy and creative expression.

Literacy Connects is a volunteer-driven Tucson nonprofit serving over 55,000 children and adults annually through literacy and arts programming that create solutions to many of society's most persistent problems. From reducing unemployment and poverty to increasing economic growth and opportunity, Literacy Connects helps us all turn the page to a brighter future!

While each of our programs use different delivery models to achieve our mission, they are unified in their focus on student-centered relationships, the use of a strength based approach, and the inclusion of joy as a central ingredient for transformational learning. We understand that while building skills is critical, shifting attitudes and behaviors is essential to long-term success. When people come to identify as learners, readers, writers, creatives, and empowered citizens, their resilience increases along with opportunities to help themselves and others. As the premier literacy hub of Southern AZ, we connect individuals and groups from across the community to work together for long-term social impact.

Primary duties:

• Oversight of customer service delivery in our library which serves volunteer reading coaches and tutors
• Provide support to reading coaches/tutors including assistance in accessing and using resources, discussing strategies to use with students and sharing challenges and successes
• Provide oversight of library volunteer team, including Federal Work Study Students
• Maintain library circulation and collection
• Communicate and collaborate with Library Coordinator about challenges or concerns of library volunteers and reading coaches/tutors

This rewarding position provides support for dedicated volunteers working one- on-one to help students achieve their literacy goals. The Library Assistant works on the front line of all our programs by assisting reading coaches and tutors in finding "just right" books and resources to use with their students. In alignment with our student-centered approach, the Library Assistant helps reading coaches find books that align with their students' interests in order to ensure engagement and promote independent reading. This support is critical to the success of our programs as it enables our volunteers to help their students grow, learn and challenge themselves while they build meaningful relationships with books and new identities as readers and learners.

The Library Assistant will also provide oversight to other library volunteers, ensuring a high-level of customer service is maintained at all times and that the library collection and environment remain welcoming and accessible. The ideal candidate needs to be flexible, open to interactions with many different people and tasks, and able to manage multiple priorities.

"My children are super excited to get books after working with their coaches. They love to share them with their friends! They have developed a true, and hopefully lasting, enjoyment of books". –Kindergarten teacher

It was so helpful that I had spent time at Literacy Connects with the library staff and they made some great suggestions for our students. Your library staff is something else!" –Reading Coach
