​Reporting to the Director of Citizenship & Immigration Services and the Director of Health & Leadership Program, the Program Assistant's basic functions are to support and expand the current program offerings of both the Citizenship and Immigration (CIT) and Health & Leadership (HLP) departments. The Program Assistant will oversee the CIT department's volunteers, outreach efforts, and assist with certain immigration applications. Additionally, the Program Assistant will assist with the health education programs for children, youth, and adults, as well as Know Your Rights workshops.


Citizenship & Immigration

Volunteer Management

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support all department volunteers (attorney and non-attorney for citizenship workshops, citizenship class, in-office, and interpreters and translators);
  • Provide volunteers with appropriate assignments, timely feedback, and support while monitoring volunteer performance;
  • Manage institutional knowledge by creating a comprehensive training manual;
  • Host and attend recruiting events within the community to attract qualified volunteer candidates;
  • Work with Marketing and Communications team to publicize opportunities for volunteers;
  • Create and distribute various communications and publications to engage and retain volunteers;
  • Organize and host volunteer recognition programs and special events;
  • Evaluate all aspects of the volunteer program with the Director to ensure effectiveness and to recommend/implement changes as appropriate;
  • Maintain accurate records in agency database and provide timely statistical and activity reports on volunteer participation; and
  • Assist with general logistics for monthly citizenship workshops.

Outreach Coordination

  • Develop and implement a strategic outreach, education,
  • Create and maintain outreach materials such as flyers, posters, and press releases in collaboration with Erie's Marketing and Communications team;
  • Identify community outreach opportunities such as fairs, festivals, local markets, and organizations;
  • Plan and conduct presentations and trainings in English and Spanish to the community to raise awareness of department services;
  • Collaborate with other Erie departments on programming and agency-wide related events and activities;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with representatives of community, social, and civic organizations;
  • Provide necessary reports, data, and documentation to Director, Erie staff, or funders when requested; and
  • Recruit and train staff members and volunteers to assist in carrying out community outreach activities.


  • Attend trainings on immigration law and practice;
  • Under legal staff supervision, prepare certain immigration benefit applications;
  • Participate in staff meetings and other administrative meetings; and
  • Other duties as reasonable and appropriate.


Health & Leadership Programs

  • Coordinate and plan health sessions and curricula for preschool children, school-age students, and youth;
  • Help prepare for and facilitate HLP adult health groups;
  • Maintain database for all HLP programs;
  • Coordinate outreach for Erie Neighborhood House's promotoras (community navigators) and outreach for legal service workshops and educational events;
  • Assist with the leadership development, goal setting and tracking, and coalition building for Erie's promotoras;
  • Actively participate in public education workshops regarding important immigration, employment, and health issues facing the community;
  • Assist community members in creating emergency preparedness plans and accompaniment to access public services when needed;
  • Actively engage in understanding current immigration law and Erie Neighborhood House's office procedures relating to immigration case work;
  • Attend and participate in required educational programs and staff meetings;
  • Assist with coordinating and implementing Erie's advocacy agenda;
  • Participate in all HLP department meetings; and
  • Other duties as reasonable and appropriate.


  • Associate's degree or equivalent experience preferred;
  •  Fluency in English and Spanish required;
  •  Strong relational skills and cross-cultural understanding;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and sensitivity to challenges of the immigrant community;
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills;
  • Excellent written and interpersonal skills;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
