Did you know…
In 1838, the U.S. government forcibly removed the Potawatomi from their ancestral homelands in the state of Indiana. There were 859 Potawatomi who made the journey across Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and finally Kansas, the intended destination. Due to the loss of 41 lives in total, the removal become known as the Potawatomi Trail of Death. (https://www.potawatomi.org/culture/trail-of-death/)
In learning more, through an experience that will take us on our own journey of 10 days. We will begin in Elkhart, Indiana, with a few orientation days, consisting of activities, readings and discussions focused on the history and present-day realities for Indigenous peoples in the U.S. Then we will travel a portion of the Trail of Death, acknowledging markers of the Trail of Death, engaging in conversation, and camping along the way. We will end our time with a full day to debrief and reflect on the experience.
Your team leader will be Marisa Smucker. Find out more about Marisa here.
